The art of the embroideresses (from the ?Hauts' or ?heights') still exists thanks to the talent of a few needle and thread experts. It is in Cilaos that Reunion embroidery is most reputed and known as the ?jours de Cilaos' because of the openwork patterns. These openwork patterns decorate doilies, handkerchiefs, napkins and table cloths and they are a valuable gift as well as a token of a century-old tradition. Try and bargain for them in souvenir and handicraft shops.
