Unlike in Mauritius, sugar cane fields have not taken over the whole landscape. The coasts are lined with beef trees in the west and screwpines in the east. The vegetation inland is plush and green, particularly at the cirque de Salazie in the northwest and the forests of Belouve and Bebour are home to guavas, tree ferns, orchids and coloured wood, etc. Around the traditional Creole houses, you will see a profusion of flowers, including: bougainvillea, frangipani, jacarandas, hibiscus and spice plants. Plant enthusiasts should definitely visit Mascarin's botanical conservatory, which is housed in an old farm near Saint Leu, as well as the Garden of Eden, near Saint-Gilles-les-Bains.
