As is the case on the island of Mauritius, dodos and tortoises have disappeared. You will still find endemic birds, however, such as white blackbirds. The forests are home to feathered game, some rare rusa deers and hares, however, Reunion's emblematic animal remains the chameleon which is known here as "sleepy" (l'endormi), because it moves so slowly. When you are driving, you must be careful if you see one crossing the road!
