'Piton de la Fournaise' An active volcano, the peak manages to inspire awe and fear at the same time. To get there, you have to cross a vast lunar expanse of sandy plains. © Oliver Gerhard - age fotostock
Climbing to the top of the volcano (7,745 ft) is easy, if you are in good health and well-equipped (take warm and waterproof clothing, because the weather changes very quickly). Allow roughly 5 hours as long as you carefully follow the signposts. Two highlights of the climb are crossing the Plaine des Sables (a vast moon-shaped sand expansion) and the view of the smoke and gas emanating from the craters. Stop at the Volcano House, conceived by volcanologists Maurice and Katia Krafft which is very didactic and shows impressive footage of past eruptions.
