The plant varieties of Reunion are still used by great Parisian perfumers: geranium and vetiver or vanilla are still distilled in traditional distilleries. On the east coast in Saint André, stop off at the Vanilla House, an old Creole distillery, where orchids are still pollinated with a needle to make the precious pods grow. Those who are passionate about botanics are spoilt for choice. It is possible to combine hiking and tropical fragrances by walking up the path of Mare Longue in the southeast, to the 7 acre Garden of Perfume and Spices.
