If you are even slightly interested in history, you should stop off in Saint-Paul (preferably on a Friday or a Saturday, so that you can enjoy the market at the same time) even if it is just to visit the seamen's cemetery, which says a lot about the island's past. When you see Olivier Le Vasseur's tomb, also known as 'the buzzard', it will remind you that Reunion was once a pirate's hideout. Also, do not miss a visit to the "first French settler's cave", where a dozen exiled refugees sought shelter after having been banished from Fort Dauphin, in Madagascar.
