Impossible to stay on the island without taking a walk inland to a place called the 'Hauts' (heights). The island is made from two major volcanic ranges. One of them, centred around Piton des Neiges in the northwest, gave rise to three cirques (corries): Cilaos, Mafate and Salazie. The other range, Piton de la Fournaise in the southwest, is still active (the last eruption dates back to 1999). The High Plains stretch between the two: The Plain des Palmistes and the Plain des Cafres.
