Brasov

Brasov

An old medieval Saxon city (once known as Kronstadt), Brasov is really charming, with its pedestrian centre which stretches along strada Republici, its bastions and fortifications, its orthodox churches and the art museum. The pedestrian centre, all around Statului square, is packed with café terraces where it is pleasant to sit in the sun while watching the world go by. Piata Statului displays the city's most beautiful medieval buildings, and particularly the Council House, a baroque house with a clock tower and a yellow façade decorated with the city's coat of arms. Just behind the square stands the Black church (Biserica Neagra), Romania's largest gothic church, austerely beautiful. Around the square, you can stroll in a maze of narrow lanes lined with adorable houses with polychromic façades and red tiled roofs. You should also go for a walk in the ancient district of Shei and to the top of Timpa hill, accessible only by cable car, where a magnificent panorama unfolds over Brasov.
