Bucharest

Bucharest Bucharest Traumatised by the USSR era, Bucharest has managed to maintain certain aspects of its period of urban-planning and concrete dictatorship. © René Mattes

Surrounded by a belt of Stalin-style concrete suburbs, Bucharest was spoilt by gigantic and sinister buildings, such as the palace of Parliament. Nonetheless, Bucharest does hold some beautiful buildings as well as some pleasant districts for a stroll. Around piata Unirii, the capital's nerve centre, do not miss the small Hanul Manuc Inn, a splendid house turned into a hotel-restaurant; strada Lipscani and the very lively little streets around it; the great History museum on calea Victoriei, the orthodox church and the Carul cu Bere pub on strada Stavropoleos. A little way from the centre, the pretty Herastrau park shelters the Romanian farming museum and the Village and Popular Art museum, which gathers Romania's main types of rural architecture over 25 wooded acres.
