Sighisoara

An old fortified Saxon city, Sighisoara is incomparably charming. The higher city, protected on its promontory by fortifications and sixteen towers, with its cobbled streets and beautiful light-coloured houses and flowery balconies, conveys a medieval and romantic atmosphere, which singularly contrasts with the grayness of the lower city. You will walk into the old citadel through a narrow staircase between bastions and redoubts. From under the porch of the Clock tower you can see a magnificent belfry decorated with little steeples and covered in yellow and green glazed tiles. At regular times, the clock's mechanism goes off, making the little painted wood figurines twirl round, and ringing out its pretty chime. A little further away on strada Muzeului, an inn with an ochre facade boasts a plaque indicating that this is the place where Vlad Tepes - or prince Dracula - was born in 1431. As you walk up strada Scolii, a long and wooden staircase allows you to get to the Hill Church (Biserica din Deal), designed in a Gothic style. Roughly twenty miles out of town, do not miss Biertan church, a Unesco site, one of Romania's most beautiful fortified churches.
