In brief
1147: Youri Dolgorouki, prince of Vladimir, built a first wooden fortress (kremlin) on the site of Moscow.
1260: Alexander Nevsky put his son Daniel at the head of the principality of Moscow.
1328: the Russian Church transferred their headquarters to Moscow which becomes Russia's new centre.
1480: under the reign of Ivan III, Moscow became the capital city of a new powerful and centralised state. Italian architects come to build new buildings in the Kremlin (the Palace of Facets and the Dormition Cathedral).
1547: Ivan IV the Terrible was crowned Tsar of all of Russia. His victory over the Tartars in 1552 was celebrated with the building of Saint Basil's church on the Red Square.
1571: the Tartars burned down Moscow.
1612: the Russian People's army freed Moscow from Polish invaders. Tsar Romanov restored the dynasty.
1712: Peter the Great transferred the capital city to Saint Petersburg. Moscow remained the religious capital of the country.
1762-1796: reign of Catherine II.
1812: Napoleon invaded Moscow. The city burned down.
1861: abolition of slavery. The industrial revolution started and Moscow expanded rapidly.
1904-1905: first revolution.
1917: Lenin took control of the government. Moscow became the new capital city for the Soviet Union.
1924: Lenin died.
1928-1938: Stalin, master of the country imposed a terror regime.
1941, Nazi troops attacked the USSR. The German army was defeated in Stalingrad in 1943.
1953: death of Stalin and election of Khrushchev.
1964: Brejnev succeeded him, followed by Andropov and Chernenko.
1979: invasion of Afghanistan.
1985: election of Gorbachev who launches perestroika (the economical and institutional reconstruction or restructuring program) which was paired with glasnost (from 1988 onwards) which was intended to make all government activity transparent.
1991: putsch attempt by the conservatives. Dissolution of the Soviet Union. Yeltsin was elected president of Russia.
1993: riots at Moscow's parliament. Breakthrough of Jirinovski and the ultra-nationalists at the legislative elections.
1996: re-election of Yeltsin.
1999: offensive launched in Chechnya. Yeltsin resigned.
May 2000: Vladimir Putin was elected President.
15th March 2004: Vladimir Putin was re-elected.
