The climate in Moscow is continental with hot and dry summers and very harsh winters.
Winter is particularly long, from mid-November to the end of April. The lowest temperatures are picked up in January (an average -11°C, with drops to -30°C). From March onwards, the weather warms up progressively (an average -4°C), the snow starts to melt and the Moskva breaks from its ice shackles.
Spring time, late and short, starts in May, when the first storms break out and the vegetation starts to bloom. The temperatures then are fairly mild (12 to 15°C in average), although still quite chilly at night time.
As early as the beginning of June, summer shows its face. It is hot during the day, sometimes even stormy. Maximum temperatures are reached in July with an average 19°C and fall back to 17°C in average in August. Autumn comes early (the first leaves fall from the trees at the end of August) and, as early as mid-September, warm clothes and parkas are needed again. In October, it gets frosty at night time and the days are shorter.
To sum up, the best time to visit Moscow is between the end of May and the beginning of September.
