The climate in Saint Petersburg is continental, slightly tempered by the influence of the sea, with fairly hot and dry summers and quite harsh winters.
Winter is particularly long, from mid-November to the end of April. The lowest temperatures are picked up in January (an average - 8 °C, with drops to - 15 °C). From March onwards, the weather warms up progressively (an average - 4 °C), the snow starts to melt.
Spring time, late and short, starts in May, when the first storms break out and the vegetation starts to bloom. Temperatures are quite mild (12 to 16 °C in average), although still chilly at night time. It still rains often.
As early as the beginning of June, summer shows its face. It is the time of the famous white nights and their surreal light, which last from June 11th to July 2nd. It is hot during the day, sometimes even stormy. Maximum temperatures are reached in July with an average 20 °C and fall back to 17 °C in average in August. As early as the end of August, it is already the end of the summer season with the first leaves falling from the trees.
Autumn comes early and from mid-September onwards, warm clothes are needed again. In October come the first snow falls. From mid-November, the Neva is seized in ice.
To sum up, the best season to visit Saint Petersburg lies between the end of May and early September.
