The Volcano national park is located in the North, on the border with Zaire and Uganda. The Virunga range is one of the most beautiful sites in the whole of Africa: it is a succession of seven volcanoes, the highest one towering at an altitude of 14, 763 ft. The first ever African park, created in 1925, is renowned for its inhabitants, the famous mountain gorillas. They are one of the major wonders of our contemporary world. The Beringei is an anthropoid ape, now rare on our planet. It is possible to come as close as two to three yards from them and observe the almost human intimacy of these last remaining families of the gorillas. The "silverbacks" live in the rain forest on the volcanoes, close to Ruhengeri. These well guarded and preserved specimens are worth a visit, and are actually unforgettable. This park also shelters other mammals such as elephants. Do not miss out, from the top of the volcanoes, on the both picturesque and varied landscape throughout the thousand hills.
