Hiring a car is the best idea. Driving is on the right, everywhere on the island. You need to be at least 25 years of age to hire a vehicle. We recommend you to go with

You will drive across the border without even realising you've done so. There is no custom check. You will find taxis at Juliana airport, Marigot harbour and in Philipsburg. They are equipped with a meter. Strangely, some of them do not accept dollars, especially in the Dutch part. Ask before getting in. You will also find numerous vans playing the part of buses. They pick up several passengers. Short trips, especially within town, cost 1 dollar. For long distances, the fare depends on how far you are going.
