Of volcanic origin, the archipelago is characterised by very hilly relief, with numerous eroded peaks, such as Pico São Tomé, the island's highest at an altitude of 6640 ft, and Pico Príncipe (3110 ft). In the heart of the islands, mountains shoot up, from the top of which numerous streams trickle down. Tropical forest covers almost 70 % of the territory.
