Casamance, Senegal

The Casamance is a region that is still little visited by tourists. It has been recently open to tourism and offers many advantages. The regions's immense and deserted sandy beaches make it one of the best seaside spots in the country. Located in the south of the country, Casamance displays amazing landscapes of rice paddies near the coast, and rocky landscapes as you head inland with a few scattered palm trees and tufts of elephant grass. Visitors will be welcomed warmly.

pros

  •  Huge, deserted beaches
  •  The region is not overcrowded with tourists, so you will not be invaded by tourists

cons

  •  Poorly developed region
  •  Accommodations choices are very limited

Visit Casamance

  • To see

The Cap Skirring is located in the far south of the country, just over 40 miles west of Ziguinchor. It is marked by large sandy bays separated by rocky peaks. You can also take pirogue tours to discover the coastline villages nearby.

    To do

This is the ideal destination for those looking to stay in a seaside resort. Athletes can practice all kinds of water sports, while golfers cannot miss a visit to the Club Med Golf.

    To think about

Remember to take anti-malaria treatment as well as sun lotion and anti-mosquito products.
  • To avoid

If you want to take pictures of the local people, talk to them beforehand and then ask them if they'd agree to be photographed. In most cases they would happily oblige.

    To try

The national dish is the tiep-bou-diene, rice made flavoursome with vegetables and fish. Meat (beef, lamb, chicken) is served in a peanut sauce (mafe) or in a marinade (yassa). By the seaside, try the delicious seafood like oysters, prawns and lobster. Out in the bush, taste the game, the warthog in particular. The exotic fruits are varied and excellent such as mango, pawpaw, soursop, guava and ditakh. As for drinks, have a taste of bissap, palm wine or millet beer.

    To bring back

The crafts of Senegal are varied. You can buy wicker baskets, masks, awale, wooden sculptures and fabrics. You will also find beautiful jewellery.
