South from the Danube, hills and mountains dominate the landscape (two thirds of the country), which is rich in natural sites of interest: alpine landscapes, steep-sided valleys, tempestuous rivers and multiple watercourses, canyons and natural caves. To the east of the Danube looms the Balkan Mountain Range (Stara Planina) whose average altitude reaches 6,560 ft, limited as it is by both the Romanian border and the Iron Gate. To the west of the Danube, the Dinaric Alps stand tall with Mount Kopaonik in particular, which peaks at 6,810 ft (the country's highest) and is reputed for its winter sports resort. You should not miss a visit to Tara National Park, the habitat for varied wildlife.
