Freetown

Freetown has no specific cultural attractions. It is interesting, however, just to take a stroll around the town markets. The most popular is Basket Market near the seafront on Wallace Johnson Street. Crowds flock there, creating a somewhat overheated and colourful atmosphere. You will see many fruits and vegetables, over-sized saucepans and all sorts of dishes. Further on, to the extreme north of Pademba Road, you will be able to see the famous 500 year-old cotton plant in Freetown. You will also come across the National Museum whose mask collection is definitely worth seeing. In the immediate vicinity of Freetown, do not miss a visit to the villages of Gloucester and Regent. The air is purer there than in the centre of Freetown, you should take a walk around and discover their Krio-style houses.
