1568: discovery of the archipelago by Spaniard Alvaro de Mendaņa, who names it after King Solomon.
1898: the archipelago is shared out between Great Britain on the east side and Germany who gets Bougainville and Buka.
1921: Australia takes control of the German islands.
1942-1943: the archipelago is the setting of violent fighting between the Americans and Japanese. Numerous ships sink during the battle of Guadalcanal.
1975: Papua New Guinea takes possession of the islands of Bougainville and Buka.
1978: independence as a member country of the Commonwealth.
1989: Mamaloni is appointed Prime Minister.
1997: Bartholomew Ulufa'alu becomes the head of a coalition government.
