The shopping centres of Johannesburg Johannesburg has little to offer in the way of tourist attractions but there is certainly no shortage of shopping opportunities! © Patrick de Wilde
Johannesburg is not a typical tourist city. It is rather an example of the complex character of South Africa, as it represents the best (the integration of the black population) and the worst (the townships and the galloping crime rate). The city is inevitable as it harbours the international airport, making it a place sure to be visited by all the tourists coming to this country. Frankly speaking, it is not essential to visit it, unless you wish to merge deeply with the atmosphere reigning over the country. Johannesburg offers just a handful of attractions: the site of Gold Reef City, the business quarter of Sandton and the shopping centres.
