The Big Hole The Big Hole is a former working mine in Kimberley. The Eureka diamond was discovered by a child in the 19th century, evoking a real infatuation with the mineral. © Tom Mueller - age fotostock
Kimberley is the "city of diamonds", where the main industry is focused on the mining activity. This is where the famous De Beers Consolited Mines is prospering and that Cecil John Rhodes (who gave his name to Rhodesia, nowadays Zimbabwe) has earned his incalculable fortune. Getting on the brink of the "Big Hole", you can take a glimpse into the largest hole ever made by humans, the place where for a long time gems were extracted, before the digging of mine galleries. Reaching a depth of about 2,600 feet, the Big Hole is now three-quarters filled up with water (and you can enter it through a gate from the Mining Museum).
