Kwaito

Kwaito is a form of musical expression popular among young people from the townships, and is typified by a mix of slow house beats and chants in various languages, in particular Afrikaans and slang. The style is named after a group of gangsters from 1950's Sophiatown, Amakwaito, 'kwaai' meaning 'anger' in Afrikaans, and its creator, who is now an authority in the subject, is called Arthur Mafokate. Since 2000, the band Bongo Maffin has been combining Kwaito with Afro-Jazz. The music is currently enjoying much success, and its best known performers are Brickz, Zola, Mandoza, etc.
