L'Isicatamiya

L'Isicatamiya Traditional Zulu songs Isicathamiya is a harmonious combination of different voices. Vladimira Dvorakova / age fotostock;

Isicathamiya (which means to walk softly, in Zulu) is a musical style with Zulu origins. The genre was made popular by the band Ladysmith Mambazo and internationally it is one of the most successful South African musical exports. The melody is sung by an 'a cappella' choir, usually all-male, singing traditional Zulu songs. The harmonious vocal mix is made all the more powerful by the original dress worn by the singers: a dark suit, white gloves and two-tone shoes. The best places to go to hear this kind of music are the streets of Imbali, a township of Pietermaritzburg (KwaZulu-Natal Province), and the Victoria and Alfred seafront in Cape Town, where various groups perform.
