Maskanda is performed on several instruments, usually an acoustic guitar, which may well be made from used tin cans. The quick-fire vocals allow old and new musical genres to be combined, with songs dedicated either to the performer's ancestors or to the chief of their tribe. One of the first musicians to perform Maskanda was Shiyani Ngcobo, who was born in Umzinto in KwaZulu Province and has been playing in this style for 30 years.
