South Africa's private reserves The natural reserves set themselves apart from the others for their more upscale services, sometimes considered as luxurious. © James Campbell - age fotostock
Actual ecosystems managed by local authorities combining high standard tourism with protection of the natural heritage, these reserves are mainly situated in the regions of Mpumalanga and Kwazulu-Natal (often bordering the national parks). The tariffs of these 'Game Lodges' are considerably higher than in traditional camping facilities, but the services offered are exceptional. Experienced guides accompany you with a no-roof Land Rover only a few feet away from big cats, buffalos and rhinoceroses. In the evening, you can share your emotions by the fireside, in the luxurious lodges which offer hotel services of high standard. The most popular private reserves are those of Sabie Sands, Timbavati, Manyeleti and Thornybush. Sabie Sands and Timbavati do not have a physical barrier separating them from the Kruger National Park, which allows for free movement of all animals (which will soon be the case for the other two parks).
