South African jazz

Although jazz was born in the United States, it is a very important musical genre in South Africa, and many festivals and concerts are organised throughout the country, including traditional styles as well as the contemporary Afro-Jazz. Cape Town International Jazz Festival is one of the best known of these events. South Africa has produced several famous jazz musicians, for example the pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, the singer Sibongile Khumalo, Hugh Masakela and the sorely missed Miriam Makeba.
