The Kruger National Park, South Africa

Without doubt the most mythical animal park in Africa and because of its size, equivalent to that of Israel, is the number one animal attraction in Southern Africa. Protected since 1898, the national park is one of the largest nature reserves on the continent with 7,800 sq mi and more than 1,550 miles of roads and tracks. Flora and fauna are everywhere in abundance, including 507 varieties of birds. You can also see all of the so-called 'Big Five'. Be patient if you want to see them all...
The southern part of the park remains the most frequented area. The Sabie River and a wetter climate have helped to nurture a denser population of animals.
People who like to sleep in late should abstain! It is with the sunrise that animals start moving around. Around 9:00 am, only the cheetahs continue to sleep, while other big cats disappear into the scenery.

pros

  •  One of the biggest and most beautiful natural parks in Africa.
  •  A large animal diversity.
  •  Vast infrastructure.

cons

  •  A strictly regulated access (so much the better for wildlife).
  •  An intensive influx of tourists.
  •  A large area, which may make it difficult to observe the wildlife.

Visit The Kruger National Park

  • To see

In the north-east, between the mountain massif of Drakensberg and the border with Mozambique, is the vast open space of the Kruger National Park. Established in 1889, this nature reserve was to provide a place of ultimate refuge for many species threatened with extinction due to ruthless hunting. Since then, the park has largely lived up to its promises and currently it is inhabited by more animal species than in any other park in Africa. Easily accessible through a network of roads, with asphalt and numerous places of residence, the park attracts up to 900,000 visitors a year. An attendance certainly impressive, but whose impact on the environment remains limited because of legislation and strict control.

    To do

Observation of the wildlife with more than 1,500 lions, 8,200 elephants, 500 leopards, 5,000 giraffes and 1,800 white rhinoceros. Spend a night in outdoor lodgings, to fully experience the wild.

    To think about

You are in a nature reserve, respect the nature around you, do not damage this wild and natural environment.
  • To avoid

While you are in the bush, stay close to the vehicle. The animals reign supreme here, and the intruder is you!

    To try

Wine and fish are specialities. The lodges where you will be staying will offer South African specialties.

    To bring back

You can go shopping in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.
