To the north-east, between the massif of Drakensberg and the border with Mozambique, lies the immense Kruger National Park. Created in 1889, this reserve was designed to give ultimate refuge to numerous species threatened with extinction because of excessive hunting. Since then, the park has kept its promises and counts more species than any other park in Africa. It is easy to access thanks to a bitumen road network where numerous places of residence are built; the park attracts some 900,000 visitors each year. This level of popularity among the visitors is quite impressive, and fortunately their impact on the environment is limited by virtue of strict legislation and control measures.
