Andong Hahoe, a traditional village that has retained its stately country houses, holds a Folk Festival every year. © Julie Falcoz
A small city in the middle of the country, Andong is decidedly less touristy than Gyeongju and Daegu. You'll certainly get a warmer welcome here from the Koreans, and you'll find young locals will readily approach tourists to find out where they're from. The food market in the city centre is very pleasant, with chicken and apples being the regional specialties, so be sure to try both before you leave! The surrounding hills are where you'll find Dosanseowon, one of the country's last remaining Confucian Schools and a truly magical place. Southwest of the city, meanwhile, lies Hahoe, a traditional village that has managed to maintain its rustic and bourgeois houses, and that hosts the yearly Folk Festival.
