Geumgansan - the Diamond Mountains

Geumgansan - the Diamond Mountains Geumgangsan, the diamond mountains One of the most fantastic mountainous landscapes in the world. Vladimira Dvorakova / age fotostock;

The mountains have this name because they twinkle at sunrise and make for one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the world. The 150m Guryong waterfall, meanwhile, takes its name from the 9 dragon-shaped basins. The tens of thousands of rocks at Manmulsang, all of which are shaped either like living creatures or general objects, also offer countless photo opportunities, depending on where you're standing. The Samilpo estuary, meaning 'the estuary of the 3 days', takes its name from a wonderful legend that tells the tale of a young guard from the Silla dynasty who spent 3 days here admiring the magnificent landscapes. These mountains stand to the southwest of North Korea but, unfortunately, have been closed to visitors since December 2008, when the North Korean government closed the road leading to them.
