Gyeongju, a real museum-town, is an must-see stop on a visit to South Korea. The capital of the old kingdom of Silla (57 BC - 935 AD), it is scattered with various remnants of past dynastic splendour. Various royal tombs buried under tumuli bear witness to the cultural and historical importance of the place. After having visited Cheomseongdae, one of the oldest observatories in the world, stop by Bunhwangsa, the oldest pagoda in the country, the ruins of Weolseong, with the half-moon palace, Hwangnyongsa, the temple of the yellow dragon, and other Buddhist marvels. A visit to the rich national museum will allow you to piece together the prestige and breadth of this civilisation. In the surrounding areas, the famous temples of Bulguksa, and the Seokguram grotto and its benevolent Buddha Shakyamuni, are jewels of Korean Buddhist art classified by Unesco as world cultural heritage.
