The dolmen sites More than 30,000 dolmens, or portal tombs, can be found in Korea. Vladimira Dvorakova / age fotostock;
Korea is home to over 30,000 dolmens, with three of its dolmen sites, namely those at Gochang, Hwasun, and Ganghwa, having been listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. The one at the centre of the village of Maesan has 447 dolmens over an area of 1764m², whilst the recently discovered dolmens at Hwasun are, as a result, particularly well preserved. The dolmens found at the foot of Mt. Goryeosan in Ganghwa, meanwhile, are among the highest in the world. There is even rumour of some dolmens to be found in the city of Seoul itself.
