A Coruña

A Coruña

This city lies to the far north-east of the peninsula, overlooking the sea which kept the city going for centuries thanks to the fishing and maritime commercial opportunities it offered. It's no coincidence, either, that it also boasts the oldest lighthouse in the world still in operation today. The Tower of Hercules (or 'Torre de Hércules' in Spanish) is dedicated to the Roman counterpart of the Greek God Zeus and was built almost 2,000 years ago. Nicknamed the 'City of Glass' (or 'Ciudad de Cristal' in Spanish) due to the various clear glass buildings located along the Avenida de la Marina, A Coruña has one of the largest ports in the history of the world. It is also home to a large number of monuments, churches and symbolic buildings, not to mention a wide selection of museums of different kinds, styles and periods, making it the ideal destination for those with an interest in heritage. Finally, you might also be pleased to know that you'll find a decent selection of beaches on the outskirts of the city, as well as plenty of nature and culture. The Castro de Elviña (fortified camp) and Monte de San Pedro, a spectacular viewpoint, are also worth a visit.
