The city of Cordoba is on a meander of the Guadalquivir river. The Mezquita (Great Mosque), lies on more than 850 marble, granite and jasper pillars and its construction dates back to 785 AD. The Mirhab (or praying niche) protects an invaluable copy of the Koran. The first Christian chapel was built inside the mosque in 1317. West of the Mezquita, the old Jewish district constitutes the heart of the Old City, with its paved roads and iron welded balconies. The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos is comprised of a 14th century palace and a garden with ponds and terraces.
