The smallest (107 sq mi) and westernmost island of the Canary archipelago remains wild and almost untouched. Despite there being no sandy beaches, the turquoise waters are ideal for scuba diving. The juniper and pine trees that have been flattened by strong winds in the island's interior provide an unusual landscape. La Hierro is also home to a surprising variety of fauna and flora as well as superb landscapes like El Golfo, a fertile geological depression located in an old crater.
