Fuerteventura, Spain, The Canary Islands

If you're a fan of endless beaches and crystal clear water there's no need to cross vast oceans to discover these places of paradise. Not far from from the African coast (57 miles), Fuerteventura undoubtedly offers the most beautiful beaches of the Canary Islands, we might say of the whole Atlantic! Miles and miles of fine white sandy beaches border the island's shallow turquoise waters. The seabeds, which host a variety of fauna, are great for diving; however, Fuerteventura is especially famous for being one of the best spots in the world for sailing and kite surfing due to the incessant winds that blow from April to October.

The famous beach of Jandia, which stretches over 15 miles from Morro Jable to Costa Calma in the south of the island, hosts the world championships in July and August. However, the attraction of the 'red island' is not limited to its beaches!

The desert landscape is reminiscent of the American West and its mountains - scattered with windmills - conceal picturesque villages and their white houses like those of the ancient capitals Antigua, Pajara and Betancuria.

At the north end of the island, Corralejo (classified a national park) is a small fishing town which is ideally located near a dune-filled wide beach facing the volcanic island of Los Lobos. The Saharan landscape makes us realise that Africa is actually not so far away. Ferries leave from the port of Corralejo and take you to Lanzarote in only 12 minutes.

pros

  •  The long, white, sandy beaches.
  •  Volcanic and desert-filled landscape.
  •  A pleasant and sunny climate all year round
  •  A place known for its kitesurfing and windsurfing

cons

  •  The lack of cultural sites.
  •  The area is prone to strong winds.

Visit Fuerteventura

  • To see

You should visit the ?Saharan landscape' of the dunes on the beaches of Corralejo in the north and Jandia in the south; as well as the ochre and red-coloured arid mountains at the centre of the island, which seem to have come straight out of a Western. Fuerteventura hides some stunning treasures, like the charming village of Oliva with its palace-like houses; and the old capital of Betancuria, a town that has hardly changed since the 15th century.

    To do

Fuerteventura is the destination of choice for sport lovers who wish to practise their kite surfing, windsurfing, golf, horse riding, diving or hiking in the middle of the island's desert-like landscapes. Lazing on the beaches (with their endless dunes) is also a very popular activity on the 'red island', where you won't tire of admiring the most beautiful beaches on the Canary Islands. If you want spectacular views, take the trail which begins just before you arrive in Corralejo, and follow it up to the top of Bayuyo San Rafael volcano, 984 ft high. From here you'll have a remarkable view of the dunes of Corralejo and the islands of Lobos and Lanzarote. Finally, why not a take little cruise off the coast of Lobos, an ancient volcanic island sanctuary for monk seals?

    To think about

As its name indicates, Fuerteventura is a very windy island, which is sure to delight kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts, but may not be such good news for others! Know that the wind dies down between February and August.
  • To avoid

Avoid wasting water, which is sorely lacking in Fuerteventura.
Avoid talking about Francoism (Franco started the civil war in the Canaries), as it may make the local people uncomfortable.

    To try

The traditional dish in the Canaries is a meat and vegetable soup that is typically served with rabbit. All dishes are accompanied with papas, Canarian potatoes served with the local sauce known as mojo. The dessert is usually the huevos mole, an egg-based mousse and the frangollo, a rich and creamy dessert available in different flavours. Do not hesitate to taste the Tenerife red wine for it is delicious - we recommend the Tacoronte.

    To bring back

There is only a small amount of local craftmanship in Fuerteventura. You can however, bring back sculptures, cheese, honey, wine, exotic plants, spices and jewellery. Be aware that the Canaries archipelago is a free tax port where you can buy a lot of non-taxed products.
