Ibiza, San Antonio bay, Spain Balearic Islands

On the west coast of Ibiza, the seaside resort of San Antonio is the second biggest tourist centre on the island. Near the marina, the 'egg of Columbus' is the true heart of the city, an essential point of reference between the pleasant seafront promenade along the beach and its port, one of the busiest places on the Balearic Islands. This long, rather urbanised coastal strip is also the undisputed realm of the British youth, who flock to the many bars, each competing to be louder than the next. Among them, the legendary Café del Mar remains the venue to see and be seen at. The crowds flock to view the memorable sunsets, sip cocktails and be entertained by the the street entertainers; snake charmers, jugglers and fire-eaters. For lovers of nature, San Antonio offers some of the most attractive coves in Ibiza such as Cala Salada, Cala Conta, Cala Gracio and its younger sister Cala Graciete and the charming villages of San Rafel and San Agusti.

pros

  •  The beautiful coves

Visit Ibiza, San Antonio bay

  • To see

From the port of San Antonio, many boats shuttle to the most isolated beaches and coves on the island. Make sure you visit the village of San Rafel and its fortified church, take in the view from Sa Talaia (the highest peak on the island) and set off on an excursion to the Santa Cova cave, one of the few that are open to visits.

    To do

The seafront promenade is where the lively bars of San Antonio are scattered. The legendary Café del Mar remains a great venue to see the sunrise or sunset, without forgetting the popular club Es Paradis Terrenal, near the marina. Spot it from a mike away thanks to its pyramid-shaped roof, the disco is famous for its 'fiesta del agua' - twice a week the dance floor turns into a real pool with clubbers in waist-high water! For romantics, the café Las Puertas del Cielo offers a prime place to admire the island sunsets. If you can get away to the clifftops that overlook the rocky islets, you'll be happy you did so as you'll most likely find yourself free of the crowds. San Antonio is also the starting point for cruises that take you to the famous rock, Es Vedra, nicknamed the 'cathedral of the Mediterranean.' The trip takes you past the magnificent coves of crystal clear water, a picture-perfect snapshot of Ibiza.

    To think about

Live your days like the locals: the Spanish rhythm means that the afternoon starts at about 4:00pm. and extends to 9:00pm, dinner is not eaten before this time! Stores and offices close between 2:00pm and 5:00pm, but most will reopen their doors until 8:00pm or later.
  • To avoid

People looking for a bit of privacy or tranquility should avoid the beaches situated in the immediate vicinity of the city, namely Talamanca, the huge Playa d'En Bossa or Figueretes.

    To try

The local bars and the restaurants are perfect for a spot of tapas, a chupito (shot) or a jug of sangria. The specialties of the island stem from Catalan cuisine; pork, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and onions feature in many dishes and soups.

    To bring back

There are few local handicrafts in Ibiza but you may find some pottery or clothing.

An earful in San Sebastian, Basque Country

Every year, the feast of Saint Sebastian, known as the Tamborrada, takes place in the Spanish Basque Country. The Tamborrada is an extremely loud noisy sreet party - and for those of you who have had the pleasure of celebrating San Juan, yes, this one's even louder! At midnight on the 19th, in the Konstituzio Plaza in the "Alde Zaharra/Parte Vieja" (Old Part), the mayor raises the flag of San Sebastián.

    Lanzarote, where nature is queen

When my editor told me that my next destination would be Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, it was like someone had just thrown me in a cage full of greedy immobile sunbathing hyenas that would move only to gorge on fried foods.
