To the east of Ibiza, Santa Eulalia is a seaside resort that is very popular among German holidaymakers. This rather quiet little city has a pleasant marina surrounded by a lengthy pedestrian promenade that connects two small beaches. A few miles to the north, the hippie market of Es Cana attracts many tourists every Wednesday. Even further north you will find the village of Sant Carlos and its beautiful little church with immaculate white walls.

A few miles away, the beach of Es Figueral offers tourists tranquility, clean beaches with clear waters. To the north of Ibiza, the creeks of Portinatx and San Miquel are home to some splendid seaside resorts. The coast hides many coves including the beautiful Cala de Benirras, protected by the amazing 'finger of God' rocky lookout that offers an ideal setting for watching the sunsets. During the summer months, the hippie community flocks here every Sunday to bathe in the sounds of world music in a 'flower power' ambience worthy of the 1960s! The countryside in this part of the island is also beautiful, with fragrant pine forests scattered over the hilly interior.

To see

Other than its beaches popular with holidaymakers, the region offers few tourist sights. Nature lovers will appreciate the hiking footpaths that snake along the coastline and through the heart of the countryside. Take a worthy detour to the caves of Can Marca in Puerto San Miquel and the caves of Es Cuyeram near San Carlos.

Located in the village resort of Punta Arabi, the hippie market of Es Cana gets very crowded every Wednesday with tourists seeking 'flower power'-type souvenirs. In San Carlos, every Saturday from 10:00am to 8:00pm, you will discover another hippie market, smaller but more typical: the market of Las Dalias, also open late every Monday evening from 7.00pm to 1.00am from June to October. Parking costs about £2.50 at each of the markets. For scuba diving fans, the Ibiza Diving Centre in Santa Eulalia organises daily outings at 9:30am and 3:30pm.

To think about

Live your days like the locals: the Spanish rhythm means that the afternoon starts at about 4:00pm. and extends to 9:00pm, dinner is not eaten before this time! Stores and offices close between 2:00pm and 5:00pm, but most will reopen their doors until 8:00pm or later.

The local bars and the restaurants are perfect for a spot of tapas, a chupito (shot) or a jug of sangria. The specialties of the island stem from Catalan cuisine; pork, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and onions feature in many dishes and soups.

There are few local handicrafts on the island of Ibiza. You can however, buy pottery, clothing, CDs (especially the music played in the local nightclubs), jewellery and various trinkets in the hippie markets of Punta Arabi in Es Cana and of Las Dalias in San Carlos.
