Culminating at 8,000 ft, La Palma has earned the title of the world's steepest island. In its centre, the Taburiente national park is home to an immense crater 18 miles wide and 2,600 ft deep, which is covered in pine trees and crisscrossed by numerous little brooks and streams. South of Santa Cruz, the capital of the island, lava flows recall the recent activity of the Teneguia, whose last eruption was in 1971.
