Majorca - Palma Although Palma is the commercial and cultural centre of Mallorca, the depth of history, culture and nightlife here often takes visitors by surprise. 123rf ©
The capital of the Balearic Islands was conquered in 1229 by King James I of Aragon. The old town contrasts with the seaside resort city that surrounds it. It is home to a majestic Gothic cathedral that overlooks the sea front with a lovely rose-stained window that measures 41ft in diameter. In the royal chapel, the wrought iron canopy is signed by Gaudi. Next to it is the Almudaina palace, an ancient Moor fortress, transformed into a residence by the Majorcan Kings. In the east, the Banys Arabs, dating back to the 10th century, are the last relics of one of the most important cities of Al-Andalus. For gourmands, a trip to the Forn des Teatre is necessary, an old pastry shop renowned for its almond gato. Outside the city centre, the Bellver Castle, built on a hill, offers a remarkable view over the bay of Palma.
