Barely ten miles from Palma, Valldemossa is a very touristic village but also a popular holiday destination with the locals of the island. It is most of all renowned for its chartreuse estate where the love affair between the writer George Sand and the composer Frédéric Chopin developed. The chapel, with frescoes by Miguel Bayeu, (Goya's brother-in-law), a contemporary art museum and a fascinating 18th century chemist complete the tour. Only one mile away from Valldemossa, the historical residence of Son Marroig also deserves a visit.
