The south-east coast of Malta has maintained an authentic charm, much better preserved than elsewhere on the island. Far from the busy atmosphere of the big cities, the traditional life is that of a population entirely dedicated to the sea.

You should see the colorful fishing ports and markets, where vegetables and fish are sold alongside the famous lace of Malta. Facing the east, the coast ends in the south with beautiful golden brown cliffs. At this place, the water has dug caves that reflect the turquoise blue waters of the sea.

It seems that the clearest waters of the Mediterranean are concentrated here. Tours in the open sea, strolls in the port and visits to archaeological sites... a programme that is worth the detour!

On the coast, you can visit several caves. The best known is the Blue Grotto. From the small port of Wied-iz-Zurrieq, take a fishing boat that will take you visit all of the surrounding caves. For a better view, take the trip around 10 AM. Further to the east, the cave of Ghar Hasan, located on top of a cliff, reveals window of blue. On the land, Ghar Dalam is the prehistoric cave, which is the most interesting on the island (paid entrance). There you will discover fossilised skeletons of dwarf animals such as elephants or hippos!

To see

The churches in the surrounding villages: Zabbar, Zejtun, Zurrieq... If you can plan your visit to coincide with the date of the "festa" (festival) it's even better! Also see the Neolithic village of Borg-in-Nadur, which dates back to 1,500 B.C. Finally, the temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra where the famous statue of Venus of Malta was discovered is now exposed in Valletta.

The Marsaxlokk market on Sunday morning. It takes place on the edge of water. A lively atmosphere from stand to stand, where you can buy fresh fish, honey, bread and cakes, fruits, vegetables and all kinds of useful objects (beach towels, sunglasses) and souvenirs (lace doilies). Few crafts are available because this market is primarily intended for local customers.

To think about

As for the traffic, it is slow everywhere. Avoid renting a car. Instead, take the local bus (very cheap) or a taxi (for semi-rural areas poorly served by public transport). Also, know that the most rainy month is February. Good weather (with exceptions) the rest of the year.

To avoid

The coasts of Marsaxlokk and Birzebugga for a swim. Marsaxlokk is lined with flat rocks from where you can easily slip into the water and unfortunately, it is not far from a power station and the port of Marsaxlokk. Birzebugga, which hosts the sandy Pretty Bay, overlooks the port area of Kalafrana. You had better go swimming on the coast of Marsaskala in order to enjoy a quieter ambiance.

To try

Fish, seafood or octopus in a restaurant on the seafront in Marsaxlokk. If it is on the menu, try typical Maltese dishes such as rabbit stew. Antipasto and pasta dishes are generally quite good. It is better to avoid pizzas, salads and hamburgers, offered almost everywhere and often inedible.

To bring back

Maltese wine (red or white). There are three main wineries that produce cru brands, very light to drink. The grape is of Italian origin. Taste thyme honey with the flavour of garrigue. As for crafts, there is handmade lace (which adorns handkerchiefs, doilies or blouses), decorative objects made of glass and works of art. Ask for more information in the hotels where exhibition sales are offered very often.
