PortAventura, Catlunya

After Disneyland Paris, PortAventura is the second most frequented entertainment park in Europe. Located on the Costa Daurada within an hour's drive away from the Barcelona airport, PortAventura becomes a real destination. The pioneer theme park in Spain, PortAventura started operating in 1995. Woody Woodpecker came a little later as the star of the Universal world. On a vast area of over 117 hectares, the visitors will discover a world divided into five quite distinct cultural worlds : the Mediterranean, Mexico, the Far West, China and Polynesia. In each region, there are many attractions for young and old people, gastronomy and its typical products. Between attractions and breathtaking rides, there is always time to open one's eyes wide before the plethora of shows ! 24 hours will not be enough to get around the various attractions. The park is open in summer from 10 a.m. to midnight and in winter (around September 20th) to 7 p.m. on weekdays and until midnight on Saturdays.
The "Caribe Aquatik Park" is the second entertainment park in PortAventura along with an external aquatic area (open in summer) and another indoors. On more than 34 000 m², the universe is dedicated to the Caribbean and the various delights of the water, with entertainment and endless water slides. The sun, the sea, the so close Salou beaches and the artistic cosmopolitan city of Barcelona ... are complementary ingredients to a stay on the spot.
The very high season is - no surprise - the summer, from June to September, with peaks in July and August. But the park has also been quite overcrowded for the last 6 years for Halloween from the end of September to early November. You can try and share in so many ways the torments of fear, horror and dread in family or with friends. The hotels also make themselves up to inspire chills and intertwined laughters. Then comes the magic of Christmas enchanting these places from the end of November to early January, the last high point of the year before closing for an annual break from the beginning of January to the end of March. The dates change substantially every year.

Visit PortAventura

  • To see

The obligatory performances every year such as the stunning "Fort Freenzee" and the comic "Can Can Show". All the festivities are adapted to the colours of the specific theme at the time. Choose your time of stay on these criteria ! Also, take a look at the vegetation of Polynesia, flowers and plants of this region are rare in Europe.

    To do

A must to see for enthusiasts : Hurakan Condor or 3 seconds of free fall from 86 metres; Dragon Khan with its 8 loops and Stampida, the wooden double course roller coaster; they are the most impressive attractions of the park !

    To think about

The park closes each year in early January to reopen in late March.
You must be at least 4.6 feet to enter all the attractions within the park's premises. It is better to know it beforehand just to avoid your children to suffer from some small frustrations because some games are not available for them yet !
Many attractions are adapted for handicapped people.
  • To avoid

Do not book your nights at the last minute because hotels around the park are very popular. You should know they have the highest occupancy rates in the Costa Daurada.
Do not enter some passages of terror with children under 5 years. The mazes can be very frightening, even for adults who are a little sensitive and impressionable .

    To try

The local restaurant in the park is the Raco de Mar with its local and Mediterranean products. In summer, the Hacienda is a particularly pleasant restaurant because you can eat Mexican cuisine outdoors in a nice patio with vivid colours. If you come along with children, remember to go to the Hidden Horse to eat hamburgers. If you are looking for the lowest price for a meal between attractions, take the direction of China and the Marco Polo, a self-service restaurant.

    To bring back

A Woody for 18 euros, the star of the park ! Of course, you can also find all the iconic characters from Universal : Woody Woodpecker, Betty Boop, the Pink Panther, Popeye, Olive Oyl... Take your time in the shops in the five regions of the world with their products such as typical dishes, plates and fabrics from China or even jewellery and textiles from Polynesia.

An earful in San Sebastian, Basque Country

Every year, the feast of Saint Sebastian, known as the Tamborrada, takes place in the Spanish Basque Country. The Tamborrada is an extremely loud noisy sreet party - and for those of you who have had the pleasure of celebrating San Juan, yes, this one's even louder! At midnight on the 19th, in the Konstituzio Plaza in the "Alde Zaharra/Parte Vieja" (Old Part), the mayor raises the flag of San Sebastián.

    Lanzarote, where nature is queen

When my editor told me that my next destination would be Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, it was like someone had just thrown me in a cage full of greedy immobile sunbathing hyenas that would move only to gorge on fried foods.
