Visit Roses

  • To see

the promenade, the 16th century citadel, the Monastery of Santa Maria of Roses, dolmens, the 16th century Mas Palou, the port, the historic laneways. Why not visit the Cap de Creus, Aiguamolls park, or the sites in and around the Alberes mountains. Moreover, if you fancy going on a hike that leaves from Roses, the town offers 6 well-marked and accessible trails that have been integrated into a unique natural environment, between the sea and the mountains.

    To do

The main attraction in Roses is its fine sandy beach where you can relax throughout summer. However, Catalonia also offers unique and refined cuisine that would be a real shame to miss out on. The choice of restaurants in this small town is vast, so you will have absolutely no trouble finding something to suit your palate. The beach in Roses is the ideal place to learn a new sport or get into sailing. We recommend you take a boat tour of Cap de Creus. This park is a true gem, displaying unique contrasts when it comes to its nature.

    To think about

You may want to hire a car to discover the region and go on some excursions. Several national parks and villages, such as Pals and Begur, are located nearby and the landscapes of 'Alt Empuria' are simply wonderful. Alternatively, one other pleasant option is to go for a bike ride.
  • To avoid

If you want to come across well to the Catalan people, avoid any remarks regarding the use of Catalan, the official language. The Catalan people are Catalan before they are Spanish and if this bothers you, it is better not to say anything, as this is a sensitive subject.

    To try

We recommend you try local fruit and Catalan specialities such as artichokes, tomato bread sprinkled with oil and seasoned with salt, and xuixos, puff pastry stuffed with French pastry cream.

    To bring back

Plenty of Catalan products can be taken on the plane with no problems, such as the mild, large sausage and chocolate sweets ('the flies of San Narciso'). Black pottery has been very popular in the region for several decades now. It is currently produced in Quart, around 3 miles from Girona.

An earful in San Sebastian, Basque Country

Every year, the feast of Saint Sebastian, known as the Tamborrada, takes place in the Spanish Basque Country. The Tamborrada is an extremely loud noisy sreet party - and for those of you who have had the pleasure of celebrating San Juan, yes, this one's even louder! At midnight on the 19th, in the Konstituzio Plaza in the "Alde Zaharra/Parte Vieja" (Old Part), the mayor raises the flag of San Sebastián.

Lanzarote, where nature is queen

When my editor told me that my next destination would be Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, it was like someone had just thrown me in a cage full of greedy immobile sunbathing hyenas that would move only to gorge on fried foods.
