Tenerife, Playa de Las Americas, Spain, The Canary Islands

Stretching out to the municipalities of Adeje and Los Cristianos, the seaside resort of Playa de Las Americas has become the symbol of mass tourism in the Canary Islands. Disfigured by property development, this sprawling city has developed on the seafront of various artificial beaches. Beach lovers will be able to devote themselves to relaxation and a whole host of water activities; from jet skiing and windsurfing to sailing, parasailing and diving. If you are seeking something a little more peaceful and authentic however, the former fisherman's village of Los Cristianos is a little more charming with its old buildings and pedestrian-only streets such as 'Calle El General Franco,' filled with shops and outdoor cafes.

Thanks to its affordable hotels and the variety of its nightclubs, casinos, bars and restaurants, Playa de Las Americas sees a stream of visitors all year round. In terms of the weather, Tenerife benefits from a particularly mild climate with winter temperatures that rarely descend below 20°C and rarely exceed 28°C in the summer. Golfers will find no less than than five golf courses here, across a radius of 12 miles. There is good disabled access with many facilities provided for people with disabilities. Links via ferry (90 minutes) and hydroplane (40 minutes) connect Playa de Las Americas to the small island of La Gomera whose Garajonay National Park has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

pros

  •  The well set-out and equipped beaches.
  •  The diversity of the seaside resorts and recreational activities.
  •  The proximity of many golf courses.

cons

  •  The seaside resorts lack charm and authenticity.
  •  The lack of cultural sites within proximity.
  •  The lack of nearby site of interest and cultural sites
  •  There are too many buildings lining the coast

Visit Tenerife, Playa de Las Americas

  • To see

You should leave the seaside resort and visit Teide National Park and its volcano. Also worth the detour are the cliffs of Los Gigantes, the small port of El Abrigo and Barranco del Infierno near Adeje, a gorge with a beautiful waterfall.

    To do

Sports lovers will appreciate the opportunity to go fishing, diving, windsurfing or hiking. The Tenerife Aquapark as well as the zoo and the go-kart track in the town of Arona are also good places to visit. The Las Aguilas Park near Playa de Las Americas is where you can practise a multitude of sports and observe the wildlife at the same time.

    To think about

Live your days like the locals: the Spanish rhythm means that the afternoon starts at about 4:00pm. and extends to 9:00pm, dinner is not eaten before this time! Stores and offices close between 2:00pm and 5:00pm, but most will reopen their doors until 8:00pm or later.
  • To avoid

Should you be in search of a bit of culture, stay well away from the south coast as it is overpopulated with seaside resorts, many lacking in charm. Opt instead for a trip to the northern coast which offers a green, more peaceful environment, one that is more appropriate for nature-based excursions. Also, avoid talking about Francoism (Franco started the civil war in the Canaries), as it may make the local people uncomfortable.

    To try

The traditional dish in the Canaries is a meat and vegetable soup that is typically served with rabbit. All dishes are accompanied with papas, Canarian potatoes served with the local sauce known as mojo. The dessert is usually the huevos mole, an egg-based mousse and the frangollo, a rich and creamy dessert available in different flavours. Do not hesitate to taste the Tenerife red wine for it is delicious - we recommend the Tacoronte.

    To bring back

There are very few local handcrafts in Tenerife. You can, however, bring back some sculptures, jewellery, flowers (strelitzias or "Parrot's Beak"), semi-precious stones (The Olivina, which comes from the Teide volcano) herbs and spices and a bottle of malvasia, an amber colored and highly alcoholic sweet wine that has given the island a reputation since the 17th century. Be aware that the Canaries archipelago is a free tax port where you can buy a lot of non-taxed products.
