For a long time the most popular resort in the Canaries, Puerto de la Cruz has somewhat lost the support of holidaymakers, who now prefer the well managed beaches and sunny climate of the south. Nevertheless, this very touristic city remains the second most popular place in Tenerife and it offers a myriad of hotels, bars and restaurants for visitors. The hotels here are of a good quality, but the choice of beaches is still very limited. La Playa Jardin, surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens, remains unquestionably the most interesting and best equipped of all the beaches. A large pool complex, the Lago Martianez, (designed by the local artist Cesar Manrique), features vast swimming pools and artificial canals that extend to the heart of beautiful tropical vegetation.
The houses in the old city have also retained a completely Canarian authenticity with their large balconies covered in flowers. The old city itself, contains a few monuments of interest including Nuestra Senora de la Pena de Francia and the Castle of San Felipe which hosts the Naval Museum, the House of the Naval Officers and the Ranilla. As for the Westerdahl Museum, this is dedicated to modern art with signature works by Miro, Ernst and Picasso.
La Orotava, a hilly, verdant region nearby, is a city that remains one of the major cultural centres of the island. A network of marked out trails allows you to easily explore the landscape in the surrounding areas, which is dominated by the imposing silhouette of Pico del Teide, the highest peak in Spain.

When my editor told me that my next destination would be Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, it was like someone had just thrown me in a cage full of greedy immobile sunbathing hyenas that would move only to gorge on fried foods. The images haunted me for days until we arrived on the island, where we were ...
Every year, the feast of Saint Sebastian, known as the Tamborrada, takes place in the Spanish Basque Country. The Tamborrada is an extremely loud noisy sreet party - and for those of you who have had the pleasure of celebrating San Juan, yes, this one's even louder! At midnight on the 19th, in the Konstituzio Plaza in the "Alde Zaharra/Parte Vieja" (Old Part), the mayor raises the flag of San Sebastián.
