The Canary Islands are home to various bird species: 70 varieties of native birds and 200 migrating species. Among the migrating species are the fantail snipes, laurel pigeons, curlews, and birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon, vultures and ospreys. Among the endemic species, you will observe the blue chaffinch, the pyrrhula, the hoopoe and the canary. You can also spot reptiles, amongst them a large variety of lizards including the giant lizard found on the island of Hierro that can grow up to 3 ft in length. There are very few mammals on the islands except for goats, sheep, hares, hedgehogs and jerboas. Imported during the 15th century, dromedaries (Arabian camels) still live on the Canary Islands today. There are far more invertebrates than vertebrates; 5,000 insect species to 109 vertebrate species.
