The Monastery of El Escorial

Not far from Madrid, the monastery of el Escorial (the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo El Real) overlooks the slopes of the Sierra Guadarrama. An austere granite monument, built under Philipp II. It encloses a basilica covered by a 92 m dome, and palaces once occupied by the Austrian dynasties. Start with the Royal Pantheon, home to numerous royal tombs, then the library and its superb ceiling decorated by Tibaldi. Finish with the Art gallery in which you will discover the master piece painted by Rogier van der Weyden in the Fifteenth Century: "The crucified Christ between the mourning Mary and Saint John".
