The route of the Caliphate is also known as the route of knowledge, of science and art; you can follow this itinerary, which was the most frequented route of the peninsula in the Middle Ages. It was well-known by merchants throughout the world. It links Cordova, the capital city of the Caliphate in Grenada and of the Muslim Nasride kingdom, with Gadalquivir valley and the Vega (irrigated planes) of Grenada, passing through the region of Jaén. The route stretches for some 130 mi and it represents a two or three day drive. The castles, forts and alcazabas (casbahs) are the remnants of 800 years of Arab presence in Spain.
There are three roads that will take you from Cordova to Grenada. The northern road runs through Espejo and Baena, whereas the southern one passes through Aguilar de la Frontera and Priego de Córdoba. They meet up at Alcalá la Real and carry on towards Grenada. The third route runs through the villages of Vega de Grenade where you can admire numerous monuments that make up the heritage of the region. This route also affords some breathtaking views: the beautifully rugged landscape of the Natural Park of the Subbetic Mountain Range.
